Species Description

**Description:** A small spring ephemeral with nodding yellow flowers and mottled green-and-brown leaves resembling fish skin.
**Size:** Grows 4 to 8 inches tall.
**Life Cycle:** Can take up to seven years to produce its first flower. Vanishes by early summer once the forest canopy closes.
**Identification:** The six-petaled yellow flower curves backward. Plants with only one leaf will not produce a flower.
**Habitat:** Found in moist, rich deciduous woods and along floodplains.
